Field Volunteering: E-Fishing

Went out at 7:30 am with Grad student Andrew O’Malley (andrew.omalley@umit.maine.edu) to volunteer in the long term Umaine sea – run brook trout project. We sampled sections 15 – 24 ( skipping 20-21) at Cove Brook in Winterport, Maine. I mainly worked nets, carryed the sample buckets, and by the end of the day learned to do ventral PIT tagging and tagged 12 to 15 of the trout captured in section 24. It was a beautiful day, but just chilly enough to need sweatshirts and to loose feeling in your fingers. I loved being out and getting some experience with tagging fish, and I feel very confident with it after the practice. No pictures of the gorgeous fish unfortunately, but next time I’ll be sure to bring the camera.
